1955 wurde das städtische Theater in der Brienner Straße mit 609 Plätzen von einer ehemaligen Mehrzweckhalle zum heutigen Volkstheater umgebaut. Mit einer 90%igen Sitzplatzauslastung ist es sicherlich eins der erfolgreichsten Theater Münchens. Vor allem mit dem seit 2005 jährlich stattfindenden Festival für junge Regisseure „Radikal jung“ hat es auch den Anschluss an die Jugend der Stadt gefunden, eben ein Theater für das ganze Volk.

The theater was founded in 1955 and is situated in the „Brienner Straße“. Boasting 609 seats it has also become one of the best liked „Volkstheater“ (popular theatres) and the shows are usually filled to 90% capacity. By hosting the festival for young directors „Radikal jung“ („radically young“) since 2005, it stays in touch with the young people of the city.
